The "Big Hill" Off-Shore Race (4Sep01)

The plan was to race from the north end of Dune du Havre aux Basque to Île d’Entrée and back, including a foot race up 'Big Hill'. The wind was most cooperative on the 4th - perhaps too much so for getting to Île d’Entrée. The photographers, journalists and volunteers got to experience the swells that existed in the channel between Sandy Hook and the island from the safety of a fishing trawler. It was quite something!! Race organizers made the prudent decision to have racers beach at the tip of Sandy Hook rather than risk the wild channel conditions and rocky Île d’Entrée landing. Sandy Hook proved to be a beautiful location for photographs and certainly the run up the closest sand dune rather than 'Big Hill' would have been appreciated by all competitiors.
